Weatherly Borough officials have agreed to pay a higher rate for recycling services, but are confident it won't be passed on to local taxpayers.

The board agreed to approve a contract with Solomon Container Service to collect from the borough's recycling bins at a cost of $295 per month.In 2015, the contract cost $100 per month.Mayor and council President Tom Connors said the recycling program doesn't just clean up the environment, it also saves borough residents money."We're not happy that the price went up, or that it went up that much, but we need the recycling, that's for sure," he said.Connors said when the borough goes out for contracts for trash collection, they receive discounts based on the amount of materials they recycle.The program does not include curbside pickup. The borough has bins at Eurana park for cardboard, plastic and aluminum.The Weatherly Lions Club also holds electronics recycling once a year. This year's event will be held June 25, and will include tire recycling as well, Connors said.He said the borough hopes to offset the cost through a clothes recycling program which it approved last month. The borough plans to build a shed where residents can turn in bags of lightly used clothing. The bags would be sold to raise revenue.
