Zoostock to be held Labor Day in Lansford

Over the last 17 years, the annual Zoostock concert in Lansford has helped raise tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Carbon/Tamaqua Unit of the American Cancer Society.

And members of the Zoo Crew say, as long as their friends and neighbors keep coming out to the festival, they'll continue putting it on."We've been doing this 17 years; we're not going to stop," said WMGH DJ Ann Marie Calabrese, an organizer and emcee of the event. The concert is held on Labor Day each year outside the Sports Zoo/Halftime Sports Bar, located on West Snyder Avenue. This year's event runs from noon-8 p.m., rain or shine.Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. There is no cost to get into the concert. Funds are raised through food and drink sales, as well as souvenir merchandise."You could come to this and not spend a dime. Of course we don't want you to do that," Calabrese said. This year's festival features Jay Smar, Lyle Mantz, Cody Scott, The 3 of Us, County Line, The Brand, Toolshed Jack and

A.D.D.The entertainers all volunteer their services, and even pay for their own beverages. The same applies to bartenders."Nobody gets any freebies," Calabrese said.Last year, between Zoostock and a couple other smaller events, the crew raised more than $23,000. In what has become a tradition, they keep the total raised a secret until they present a big check to the annual ACS telethon at Penn's Peak."We don't let anyone see it until the last minute," Calabrese said. "Sometimes I don't even know."
