Author inspires Panther students

Ellen Hopkins, who has written 13 books, visited Panther Valley High School on Wednesday and spoke to students during an assembly program.

Her visit garnered some controversy because of the contents of some of her books. She made no apologies for the contents, saying she strives for honesty as she writes on topics affecting teens, including drug use, rape, prostitution, and teen pregnancy. After her presentation, she signed autographs of her books for the students. She also met with an English class.Students said they are inspired by her writings.Macey Markovich, a member of the Student Leadership Group which financed her appearance at the school, has read all of the author's novels."It was a very inspiring presentation that she gave," Markovich said, adding, "She connects with young teenagers and even adults, and her books are relevant to a teenager's life."Markovich agreed, "There was a little controversy, but it does make an impact on every student here today."Senior Kylie Catena remarked, "I think it was inspiring and a lot better than everyone was making it out to be."Desoree McGarrity followed, "I think she was very honest. It's what kids need today. She was very eye-opening."Hunter Davidyock, a junior, commented, "I think it was pretty good. It was inspiring because my goal in life is to write a book."His friend, Brendan Beshock, a junior, added, "I definitely supported (her appearance). I'm glad she came. She has a negative view for drugs. She wasn't supporting them in any way."Adults who attended also were impressed with Hopkins. They included school board members, teachers, Superintendant Rosemary Porembo and high school principal Joseph Gunnels.School board member Michelle Markovich said, "This is a great initiation by the kids," referring that they raised money themselves and made the effort to bring Hopkins to Panther Valley."The students took the initiative on their own and raised $3,500 on their own," she added. She said she felt there was nothing wrong with having Hopkins speak to the students. "This is like thinking outside the box," she said.Hopkins was escorted throughout the school by Macey Markovich. After the talk by Hopkins during a class in the school library, she told Markovich there was a presentation for the student. When Markovich turned around, fellow student Ethan Vermillion approached Markovich holding brilliant red roses, and asked her to the prom. She responded, "Yes," and admitted that Vermillion made a good impression by having Hopkins involved in the scheme.
