West Penn Township is going to hold off on planned culvert replacements in seven locations, citing budget constraints.
During a meeting Monday, Supervisor Ted Bogosh said that taking action on the culvert replacements should be put on hold until after the township has an exact cost for planned road repair and materials. The township has been advertising for the work and materials, and bids will be opened at 8 a.m. June 9.The township's engineering firm, Alfred Benesch & Co. of Pottsville, presented a $38,000 estimated cost for engineering services and permitting for the culvert replacements. If monies are available in the road department after the road repair and materials bids are awarded, the supervisors may elect to start the permitting process for the culverts and schedule the work for spring. In another matter for the road department, the supervisors decided to purchase a melter/applicator hot tar machine, spending no more than $1,200. They will sell their existing hot tar machine through the bid process.Police Chief Brian Johnson said that the department is up and running with the new digital radios. The department will be receiving grant monies to launch part two of the Aggressive Driving Project. During May, the department made 10 criminal arrests and issued 228 traffic citations.
