State Park activities

The following programs are scheduled for the two state parks in Barnesville, Schuylkill County.

Park naturalist and conservation volunteer Pap Knauss, will lead a “Spirit of Tuscarora Trail” walk on Sunday, starting at 10:30 a.m. to search for summer wildflowers.

The trail is 4.5 miles in length and moderate in difficulty. The trail winds through several diverse habitats with a beautiful view of the Tuscarora Lake cove. There will also be a stream crossing.

Participants will meet in the upper beach parking lot near the trail head and bring a lunch. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and get along well with people and other pets. Shine only.

Tinkling bells, woolen blankets and copper pots were the stock in trade on the Pennsylvania frontier when daring men entered a forested wilderness to trade with Iroquois and Delaware warriors.

How were the trades made without money? All this will be explained by local historian Dave “Big Owl” McSurdy. The program will be held Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Locust Lake State Park amphitheater. Shine only.

Participants must wear a mask and prepared to practice social distancing. Register by calling Robin Tracey at 570-467-2506. Limited to 25 people.
