Back by popular demand, the second annual 5K Earth Day Hippy Run/Walk will be held April 25 in Lehighton.Proceeds raised from the event will benefit the Carbon Chamber Economic Development Corporation Business/Education Partnership Scholarship Fund, as well as the Lehighton Fire Department.The race will be held on the D&L Trail starting at the Lehighton Trailhead. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. The event starts at 9 a.m.Medals will be awarded to the top three overall winners, as well as the top three male and female winners.Overall winners are not included in the top three male and female categories.The cost for those who register by Monday is $15 for adults, $10 for children, and they will be guaranteed a T-shirt.Any registrations received after that will cost $20 for adults, $15 for children, with no T-shirt included.Kathy Henderson, director of economic development for the Carbon Chamber and Economic Development Corporation, said the event will benefit scholarships to schools in Carbon County, as well as the Carbon Career & Technical Institute.Henderson said this year the group hopes to make enough money for all the schools in the county.Scholarships will be awarded to a senior student who is in the business course of study or FBLA, as well as CCTI's DECA club.Joe Flickinger, a borough firefighter who also serves as treasurer of the fire department, said the event promotes "more of a healthy atmosphere, healthy lifestyle.""The fire department has always been about pushing education, encouraging higher education," Flickinger said.Flickinger said any funds raised will be put toward the fire company's training or equipment expenses.Sponsorship levels are as follows:• $25-The Happy Hippy Level Includes your name listed on the Thank You Sponsors! sign at the start/finish line.• $50-$100 Small Business Flower Power Level Offers your small business's name on the Thank You Sponsors! sign at the start/finish line.• $100-$300 Peace Level Includes your name or company name and logo on double-sided signs along the trail and on the Thank You Sponsors! sign at the start/finish line.• $300-$500 Far Out Level Includes your name or company name printed on the event bags and on the Thank You Sponsors! sign at the start/finish line.• $1,000 Psychedelic Level A premium corporate sponsorship opportunity to have your company name and logo on event bags in larger print, all promotional materials, a special Thank You! sponsorship sign at the start/finish line, the CCEDC website and the official Hippy Run Facebook page.The deadline for sponsorships and donations is April 10.Checks may be made payable to CCEDC, and can be mailed or dropped off at CCEDC, 137 South St., Lehighton, PA 18235.For more information, visit
