Tamaqua students present 'Honk' this weekend

Nearly everyone knows the Hans Christian Anderson story "The Ugly Duckling."

But not everyone knows the musical adaptation of the tale, a play called "Honk," which adds a few twists that aren't in the children's story. Students from Tamaqua Area School District will perform "Honk" at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the middle school auditorium. They worked through a first dress rehearsal Monday."The snow was a big problem for the Ugly Duckling," said Jillian Tuckett, who is a language arts teacher for the school district. "We missed a lot of practices because of snow days, and we've been practicing five days a week to make up for it."Auditions were held before Christmas break, and practices started when students returned to school after break. About 70 students are involved, from grades 7-12.Director Adriane Drum and assistant director Erika Cassell were helped by teachers such as Laura Makuta, who did costumes and makeup, and Chris Betz, who directs the music and orchestra.Several parents and students from Kim Woodward's middle school art class did the set design. Student Jillian Franko handled the graphic design work which appears on shirts, pins and the performance's program. The pins and shirts will be on sale before each performance. Doors will open at 6 both nights, and there will be activities to keep children entertained until the performances begin.
