Summi t Hill Fire co. lacking heat

It has been three years since the Summit Hill Fire Company located in its newly constructed building.

The heating system still isn't functioning. The exhaust system also needs repairs.During a meeting of the Summit Hill Borough Council this week, Council President Michael Kokinda remarked, "The heating system at the fire house was repaired and died again."Firefighter John Poko then remarked about the exhaust system, which is utilized to eliminate exhaust fumes inside the station.He said members of the fire department had made repairs but they didn't last."The system is junk," Poko said.Councilman Michael Alabovitz added, "It's poor design."The council agreed to look at options for getting repairs made.In other business:• Borough secretary Susan Gibiser said an audit by the state showed the borough overpaid - to the state - liquid fuels taxes by $1,641.75. She said the auditor told her the borough can donate this money to the state or ask for a refund.The council agreed to have the money returned.• Councilman John O'Gurek said potholes keep popping up but borough workers have been busy patching them.• The police department was approved to send an officer to each of three seminars.One is a facial recognition certification on March 20, which coincides with the J-Net system.Another is a school safety seminar, being held in the Lehigh Valley on March 4, and sponsored by the Governor's Office on Homeland Security. Instructors include Pa. State Police, Virginia State Police, a psychologist, and Homeland Security personnel.On March 13, at Kovatch in Nesquehoning, a course will be held for law enforcement personnel on concealed weapons and drug paraphernalia.
