Officials: Deputy shot serving warrant, suspect killed

YORK, Pa. (AP) - Authorities have identified a man killed after he shot a sheriff's deputy who had been serving a warrant in central Pennsylvania.

Authorities say two deputies visited a residential area in York Thursday morning looking for 38-year-old James Nickol. Records show state police charged Nickol on Wednesday with felony escape after he walked away from a prison work release facility.Authorities say they found Nickol in the back of a home, and he opened fire as a deputy approached. Authorities say deputy Michael Lutz, who suffered shots to his cheek and thumb, returned fire, hitting Nickol multiple times.Nickol was pronounced dead just after 11:30 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.Lutz is in stable condition. He's expected to fully recover.
