Lawyer: Trying teen as juvenile solves separate trial issue

ALLENTOWN - The attorney representing a teenage girl charged along with her soldier boyfriend in the murder of her mother says sending her case to juvenile court would resolve the question of whether the two should be tried together or separately.

The Morning Call reports that a Lehigh County hearing scheduled Tuesday on pretrial motions in the case was postponed until October.Defense attorney John Waldron said 14-year-Jamie Silvonek has "never been in trouble before" and the juvenile system "could in essence rehabilitate her."Both she and 21-year-old Army Spc. Caleb Barnes are seeking separate trials. Barnes argues that the girl has implicated him in the slaying. Her attorneys argue that it would be improper to try a juvenile alongside an adult.
