Felon charged with possession of gun

A Coaldale man with a felony record has been charged with the possession of a firearm.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed patrolman James Bonner of the Coaldale Borough Police Department in the case against Daquawn King:

At 11:19 p.m. July 2, Bonner came across a vehicle on East Ridge Street parked the wrong way on the roadway and on an angle, running with its lights on.

Bonner approached the vehicle and saw a silver handgun setting on the center console.

The registration from the vehicle was a Texas plate for a different vehicle and the VIN showed the vehicle was unregistered out of New York.

King, 31, came out of a residence in the 200 block of East Ridge Street and said that he is the driver of the vehicle. He told police it belonged to a friend.

King allowed them to search the car and several marijuana cigarettes were found in the center console. Bonner found two white wax baggies with “new world” printed on them that contained a white powdery substance, and two marijuana grinders.

The firearm, a Jennings .380 pistol, was loaded with one round in the chamber.

A criminal history check revealed that King is a felon not to possess a firearm and further does not have a concealed carry permit.

King faces charges for a prohibited firearm; carrying firearm without license; possession of controlled substance and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

He is currently incarcerated in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Sept. 8 before District Judge Stephen J. Bayer of Tamaqua.
