Potential tropical storm could bring heavy rains Friday

A potential tropical storm could bring heavy rains to our area on Friday.

But, at this point, it’s still too early to tell whether we could see any tropical storm remnants tomorrow, according to Paul Walker, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.

“The storm has not even formed yet; we’re watching an area of low pressure east of Wilmington, North Carolina,” Walker said. “It has not been designated, (but) we’re certainly watching for possible development.”

Walker said the storm will be moving northward over the course of the next couple days and may develop into a tropical system, but it has not been done yet.

“We are seeing we are going to be getting some rain from that system, Jim Thorpe and Lehighton,” he said. “We’re probably at worst on the western edge of the heavy rain.”

Walker said he thinks the areas that could be most affected will be Delaware, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

“Back here, it’s possible with this thing that we may not get a whole lot of rain from it,” he said. “Still a lot of uncertainty; without the storm having actually formed, it’s hard to say what the exact track will be (in the near future).”

Walker said there’s a slug of tropical moisture down there that’s brought some heavy rains to the Carolinas, but that there’s still uncertainty until this storm actually forms and they know better of the track.

He said that any chance for tropical storms would be Friday into Friday night.

Walker said today will be party sunny and very warm and humid, with a high near 90, and a chance of a pop-up thunderstorm. Tonight’s low is expected to be 69.

He said Friday looks to be mostly cloudy with some rain, and highs near 80, with a low of 67.

Walker said the weekend figures to see a return to warmer temperatures, as Saturday is expected to be warm and humid, with a high of 87 and the potential for an afternoon thunderstorm popping up.

He said Sunday looks to be partly sunny, with highs in the mid-80s along with a potential thunderstorm.
