A Lehighton man who was found with large quantities of marijuana was placed on probation Monday on drug-related charges, and sentenced to a prison term for drunken driving.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II placed Emilio E. Beckett, 21, on three years of probation on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and one year probation on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. The terms run consecutively. On a driving under the influence charge he was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail. He previously pleaded guilty to all the charges.Defense attorney John Waldron told the court his client is a different person since his arrest on the charges in 2014. He said he has also undergone intensive counseling, which he continues.Beckett told Nanovic, "I didn't care about anyone but myself. I've changed my goals and like to pay my debt to society."Beckett was arrested on June 17, 2014, along Ashtown Road in Mahoning Township when he was stopped for speeding. A cache of marijuana was found in the vehicle. Arresting officer Tyler Meek also detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search revealed a backpack filled with marijuana, a grinder, a box of plastic bags and a scale. The marijuana, estimated to weigh 109 grams, had an estimated street value over $2,000.The second arrest occurred on May 25, 2014, in the area of 685 Kittatinny Road in East Penn Township. State police at Lehighton responded to an accident scene in which Beckett was the driver. Beckett was found at a nearby property. A search of the vehicle resulted in 323.74 grams of marijuana being found.On Sept. 10, 2014, state police stopped Beckett along Route 443 in Mahoning Township for an equipment violation. He was found to be under the influence of marijuana, a controlled substance.Nanovic noted the amount of drugs found in the two cases was substantial. He also said Beckett not only possessed the drugs but was selling it to feed his own habit.Nanovic said Beckett comes from a good family and noted the large number of character letters of support he received from family and friends. Nanovic said because of that support and the steps Beckett has taken in addressing his drug addiction problem, he would go along with the recommendation of the adult probation office and imposed a probationary sentence in the drug cases.Nanovic also ordered Beckett to pay fines totaling $3,500 in the drug cases and $1,500 in the DUI case. He was also ordered to supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation/parole, and his license was suspended for a year in the DUI matter.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. May 31.
