Nesquehoning officials are frustrated by the lack of respect by a few people with regards to the borough's recycling program.

On Wednesday, council members talked about recent dumping taking place at the recycling bins along Locust Street.Someone recently stuffed a mattress, box spring and bed frame in a bin, as well as dumped a broken television. These things are all not recyclable and cause additional work for borough employees who must now remove the items and properly dispose of them."You got these ignorant people who move out at 9 or 10 o'clock at night and they don't care," Councilman Frank Jacobs said. "They just throw it."Council said that they will look at purchasing additional surveillance equipment for the area to hopefully catch people who are dumping trash around or in the recycling bins.If caught, dumpers will be fined and cited.Nesquehoning has had problems with people dumping trash at the recycling bins in the past, but over the past few months, an abundance of trash seems to be finding its way into the big orange bins.Items that can be recycled in the bins include newspapers, corrugated cardboard, glass and plastic bottles, cereal boxes, aluminum cans and other items marked with recyclable symbols.Items that should not be placed in the bins include televisions, pizza boxes, household appliances, furniture, clothing and trash.In other matters, the recreation commission is looking for ways to improve the borough playgrounds using a donation it received last year from Con Edison for the solar park.In particular is Johnson Park on West Railroad Street, which was the topic of discussion last year because older children and teens were using the park as a hangout and trashing the place.Officials said that rules and regulations at the park will be posted to hopefully curb the problem of older students taking over the playground.Council also announced that there are three openings on the recreation commission and one opening on the civil service commission.Anyone interested in serving on either of these commissions should submit a letter of interest to borough at 114 W.
