Officials mum on Homanko crash No charges yet in fatality involving Nesquehoning patrolman last May
The Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General is staying silent on its investigation into a fatal crash involving a Nesquehoning police officer on May 12, 2014.
"We have no comment. Thank you for your inquiry," spokeswoman Carolyn Myers wrote in an emailed response.Part-time patrolman Steven Homanko, who had been hired by the borough in July 2013, was attempting to stop a yellow Dodge Neon on Route 209 shortly before 6:30 p.m. when he lost control of his cruiser and hit a car, killing the passenger, 69-year-old Carola Sauers, and severely injuring the driver, Sauers' husband, Michael, 64.Homanko, who has an unlisted phone number, could not be reached for comment. The crash happened as Homanko, with the lights and siren activated, rounded a curve about one and one-half miles north of the intersection of routes 209 and 93, between Nesquehoning and Jim Thorpe."I just crashed. I just crashed ... I need medics," Homanko told dispatchers at 6:22 p.m., according to scanner reports. He was taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was treated and released.Pennsylvania state police initially handled the investigation, but turned it over to the Office of the Attorney General. Neither the police nor the Office of the Attorney General will say when the information was handed over. Police did not say how fast Homanko was traveling, but did say he was not pursuing a vehicle.Around the time of the crash, according to scanner reports, Jim Thorpe Borough police saw the Neon at a traffic light at the intersection of routes 903 and 209 in Jim Thorpe. Soon after, police from several surrounding departments converged on Jim Thorpe and stopped the Neon. The woman who was driving was given field sobriety tests, then she and her passenger, Michael Cardone of Lehighton, were released. The car was impounded.Cardone had been charged in the past by Homanko, but said at the time that no charges were filed by police as a result of the stop on May 12. He said the couple had not been pursued by police.Nesquehoning Borough Council put Homanko on unpaid administrative leave on May 27.Council President David Hawk at the time said Homanko had not worked any shifts since the crash due to his medical condition and would not be scheduled until the investigation is complete.
