Good Shepherd appoints new president

The Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network Board of Trustees has named Michael Spigel as the organization’s next president and corporate executive officer. He will join Good Shepherd on Aug. 3.

Spigel currently serves as president and chief operating officer at Brooks Rehabilitation in Jacksonville, Florida.

“Most recently, Michael led a post-acute network with a continuum of care and growth trajectory that closely mirrors that of Good Shepherd,” said Gary Schmidt, chair of the Board of Trustees and interim president and CEO of Good Shepherd. “Michael’s values, both personal and professional, align with Good Shepherd’s core values of compassionate care, excellent service and community partnership.”

Spigel will replace Schmidt, who has served since November 2018. To ensure a smooth transition, Schmidt will continue to serve as chair of the Board of Trustees.

Spigel’s career has focused almost exclusively on rehabilitation. He joined Brooks Rehabilitation in 2004 as president of the Outpatient Division, then served as chief operating officer, senior vice president, executive vice president, and president.

From 2000 to 2004, he worked for The RehabCare: Group in St. Louis, Missouri, as executive director; vice president of Outpatient Operations; and senior vice president of Group Operations. From 1996 to 1998, he worked for Sutter Health in Sacramento, California, and began his career as a physical therapist at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to help Good Shepherd further its mission by serving the post-acute needs of individuals and health care partners,” Spigel said.

Spigel earned his master’s degree in health administration at Chapman University in Orange County, California, and his bachelor’s degree in physical therapy at the University of Maryland.

He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, serves on the American Hospital Association Post-Acute Care Advisory Committee, and speaks at national conferences regarding leadership and the future of the industry.
