Carbon County court - DUI
Twelve defendants entered guilty pleas on Monday in Carbon County court to driving under the influence and related charges.
Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the pleas from the following:Damon David Trine,30, of Lansford, pleaded to two counts of DUI and one of prohibited offensive weapon.He was arrested for DUI on Aug. 11, 2015, by Lehighton police and on Oct. 21, 2015, by Palmerton police. In both stops a test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. The weapons count occurred on July 23, 2016, in Lehighton. Police stopped a vehicle in which Trine was a passenger. He was found to have in his possession two machetes. For the October DUI Trine had been placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked for violating conditions.Serfass deferred sentencing because Trine must obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation and will apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program - house arrest.Laura Mae Redner,33, of Tamaqua, was arrested on Jan. 28, 2016, along Bridge Street by Lehighton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. Sentencing was deferred so Redner can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.She is currently an inmate in the Lehigh County prison on other charges.James Edward Akins,48, of Andreas, was arrested on Sept. 18, 2016, along Blakeslee Boulevard Drive by Lehighton police. A test revealed a 0.16 BAC.Akins was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300 and render 25 hours of community service.Monica Marie Brown,27, of Lehighton, was arrested on Sept. 24, 2015, along First Street by Lehighton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so Brown could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation. She is currently an inmate in the Schuylkill County prison.Brad Edward Sutton,38, of Allentown, was arrested on Feb. 27, 2015, along Bridge Street in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Cody Spencer Silfies,24, of Kunkletown, was arrested on July 2, 2016, along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard by Lehighton police. A test revealed a 0.15 BAC.He was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service. He will begin the jail time at 9 a.m. March 1 and serve it straight time.Sandra Lantosh Steigerwalt,53, of Slatington, was arrested on March 13, 2016, by state police at Lehighton along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township. A test revealed a 0.15 BAC.She was sentenced to serve 10 days to 24 months in prison, a fine of $500, one-year license suspension and render 100 hours of community service.She began the jail term immediately.Ronald Getter,22, of Walnutport, was arrested on Nov. 6, 2016, by Mahoning Township police after being involved in a crash. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He also pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.Sentencing was deferred so Getter could apply for the IPP.Keith Andrew Weaver,56, of Palmerton, was arrested on Aug. 19, 2016, along Fourth Street by Palmerton police. A test revealed a 0.10 BAC. He was involved in a chase with police but crashed his motorcycle into another vehicle.Sentencing was deferred so he could apply for the IPP.Crystal S. Loar,53, of Lehighton, was arrested on July 4, 2015, by state police along Second Street in Lehighton. A test revealed a 0.20 BAC.She was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one-year license suspension and render 25 hours of community service.She will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. Jan. 27 and serve two days and then Feb. 3 and serve three days.Ryan J. Thorik,50, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on July 3, 2014, along Mauch Chunk Street by Mahoning Township police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He was previously placed in the ARD program but was revoked.Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Brady Wood,27, of Springville, Susquehanna County, was arrested on Sept. 29, 2012, along Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard by Lehighton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He was previously placed in the ARD program but was revoked for violating conditions.Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation.Those sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
