Budget woes loom in Lansford

During their monthly council meeting Wednesday, President Martin Ditsky made it a point at two separate occasions that at present it is estimated that "60 percent of the tax revenue is usually collected by this time."

Ditsky added concern by saying, "Will the borough have enough revenue to make it through the year?"His comments were made during the correspondence section, as well as during the approval of the treasurer's report. In the tax collector's report, Ditsky said, "to date the borough has collected $235,554.65."While there were no comments rendered by council at the current meeting, upon review of minutes from a meeting held Dec. 30, 2014, it is clear that some council members were concerned about the 2015 budget.Councilman Tommy Vadyak said during that meeting, "It was a bogus budget. He said we are anticipating figures of $898,000 when in this year 2014 we will take in about $725,000. He said we are looking at a shortfall," as noted in the online meeting minutes. When asked during that meeting what changes he would like to see, his response was, "To live within your means."It appears that an official cash shortfall has not been declared. Ditsky wanted to bring this potential issue to the attention of council.During Wednesday's meeting, after some heated discussions and harsh words exchanged between Vadyak and Council Vice President Mary Soberick, the firm of Barry Isset and Associates was removed from any service with the Borough of Lansford.Council has been in discussions for months after they began to question the billing practices and amount of service they had been receiving from the firm, which handled code enforcement and zoning issues for the borough. On a motion made by Vadyak, to which Ditsky provided a second, to appoint Alfred Benesch and Company to perform the duties once assigned to Barry Isset and Associates, there were not enough votes to carry the motion.Currently, Lansford Borough will be without code enforcement duties.Zoning officer duties will be maintained by borough secretary/treasurer Mary Fittos, the borough's alternate zoning officer. In addition, council unanimously approved May 30 and 31 as community yard sale day. While the borough is not hosting a community event, they encourage all of the residents to do so. This is the same day as the community yard sale slated in neighboring Coaldale Borough.
