32 displaced in motel fire

A well-known motel in the West End of Monroe County was ravaged by fire early this morning. Ten families, a total of 32 people, have been displaced.

The Pocono View Inn along Route 209 near Saylorsburg caught fire after midnight and raged up until around 6 a.m. until firefighters were able to get it under control. All motel residents are believed to have been evacuated safely from the two-story hillside motel in the Sciota section of Hamilton Township. The fire burned half of the building to the ground.A resident of the inn, Paul Fava, said he had been living at the motel for almost a year.As he combed through the scattered pile of charred debris, he pointed to some of his belongings."This was my unit right in front of you," Fava said. "These were the beads my kids played with."Also found in the charred debris were Fava's microwave, carpeting and a pair of child's ice skates. Fava has a daughter who is 10, and a son who will be 9."I totally didn't expect this," he said. "Everything I own is gone. Everything. I don't even know how to react."Fava said that he will have a place to stay between friends and family.Another resident, Marcelino Jerez, said firefighters were on scene from after midnight until around 6 this morning.Jerez rented on the other side of the building, which is still intact. He said he has lived there for about a year."We came out, I warned my neighbors," Jerez said. "We just had to sit back and watch it. That was tough."Jerez said that flames were about 12 feet over the roof of the motel."The firefighters were doing a great job containing it," he said. "I'm very appreciative of the help, and grateful they responded to it and contained it."Although the unit where Jerez lived wasn't damaged, they will have to leave as well, since there is no water, sewer or power to the building."There's nothing more to do than move forward and look for a new place," he said.Jerez said he will probably stay with a sister who lives nearby in Effort.Dave Skutnik, communications manager for the American Red Cross, said the agency will help with food, clothing and lodging."For now, we'll provide them with temporary lodging, and we'll work with them in finding a more permanent place to live," Skutnik said. The cause of the blaze was unknown as of press time.
