Domestic dispute turns deadly

Homicide charges have been filed against Darren Morales, 25, of Tobyhanna.

Morales was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Colleen Mancuso for stabbing fiancee Mahuanki Figueroa, 41, in the neck with a kitchen knife.He is currently being held without bail at the Monroe County Correctional Facility.Police Cpl. Christopher M. Boheim was contacted by Cpl. Nicholas Mecca at 11 a.m., July 9, regarding a domestic assault on Chipmunk Drive in Tobyhanna. A female victim had suffered a traumatic life threatening injury during the dispute.When Boheim arrived EMS were on the scene and had started CPR on the victim. Mecca advised Boheim that the female had been identified as Figueroa, Morales' fiancee.Morales was at the home, his face, shirt and shorts soaked with blood.Morales stated he had been involved in a domestic dispute with Figueroa that became physical. According to Morales, Figueroa picked up a knife during the fight. He stated that he hugged her and she was cut by the knife in her throat.The knife was on the floor in the kitchen along with pools of blood.Officer Gary Gaus stood in the kitchen holding the couple's infant child.Morales sustained several slashes on his left arm.During the interview conducted by Boheim and Detective Kenneth Lenning, Morales said he has had domestic disputes with Figueroa and that he had contacted the police during at least one of these events involving a knife.Morales also told Boheim and Lenning that a neighbor had come to help lend first aid to Figueroa. Morales said he heard Figueroa tell the neighbor it was Morales who killed her: "He killed me," she said.Morales had admitted to state trooper Alan Pietkiewicz he had his hands on the knife when it entered Figueroa's neck.At 12:30 p.m., Boheim was contacted by Monroe County Coroner Robert Allen, who said that Figueroa had died from her injuries, a stab wound that penetrated the carotid artery.A preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m., July 22 before Magisterial District Judge Anthony Fluegel at Monroe County Court House, Municipal Drive, Tobyhanna.
