Executive director Heidi Fareri of Meals on Wheels of Monroe County attended a recentboard meeting in Polk Township.

Her visit to Polk Township was due in part to her being involved in the national campaign March on Wheels being run by Meals on Wheels for America.Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization founded in 1972."The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness and encourage people to volunteer, Fareri said.The need for drivers and servers to deliver meals grows daily.Flexible scheduling allows volunteers to help once a month, twice a month, once a week or be on call.Meals are delivered to the homebound, the elderly and disabled.Meals on Wheels currently has "60 people on a waiting list" who do not have anyone coming to their homes with meals.Fareri said, "This has never happened before, and in order to accommodate the growing numbers of citizens who need meals delivered to their home, three new routes would be needed."This is why we are in need of volunteers."This is why a "frozen meal" route has been established.As a result, seniors are now receiving five to 10 frozen meals, along with a loaf of bread, and some fruits and vegetables, at one time.Meals on Wheels is located at 9 N.
