Grants awarded
The Garden of Giving in McMichaels, which produces fresh, nutritious, organic produce and eggs for the less fortunate in Monroe County, received the Dr. Alberta Finch and Claus Jordan grants on June 16 at the Dale Hughes Cancer Center Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg.Dr. Alberta Finch grants are awarded to programs that provide educational tools and services that foster individual responsibility for improving family health and wellness. Dr. Claus G. Jordan grants are awarded in June each year to innovative community health outreach programs and physician leadership initiatives.Tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers, kale, parsley, basil, onions, garlic, sweet corn and pumpkins are growing and in need of care and cultivation. There are many other projects in need of helping hands.This project is a good place for Pleasant Valley High School seniors and graduates to fulfill 50 hours of community service, volunteer Noreen Gorka said.For more information contact the Garden of Giving at 570-402-1282 or email

His program will include ways to help consumers safeguard their money by providing examples of scams, incompetence, etc. and methods of avoiding these pitfalls. Identity theft is also discussed, especially "phishing" attempts. Saunders has 26 years experience with the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office.The program will be presented 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the Community Center. Admission is free, however, a $2 donation will help to defray costs and support the center.There will be a sign-up sheet at the township building and the Community Thrift Shop so that rough idea of the number of attendees is obtained. All are welcome.Confessions will be at 6 p.m.Seniors' lunchThe menu for the next two meetings of the Chestnuthill Seniors is oven fried chicken on Friday and tuna salad platter next Wednesday. The group meets at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville, with doors opening at 9 a.m. Lunch reservations must be made by 11 a.m. the day before by calling the site manager at 570-242-6770 or 570-420-3735.Pantry openThe West End Food Pantry in the Eldred Township Community Center in Kunkletown is open from 9 a.m. to noon the first and third Saturday of the month.It serves the West End of Monroe County and neighboring towns. The pantry is set up set up as a choice pantry, allowing individuals to select the items needed.
