Four get prison terms on DUI charges
Four defendants in driving under the influence cases who previously pleaded guilty were sentenced on Monday in Carbon County court to county prison terms.

Serfass presided.Drug addictionJeffrey James Malloy, 29, of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced to a total of six days to 12 months in prison on two DUI counts.Malloy was arrested on the first count on July 2, 2013, along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township by state police at Lehighton.A test showed the presence of a controlled substance. The second arrest occurred on June 3, 2014, also by state police at Lehighton, along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.On Monday Malloyadmitted to a drug addiction problem including heroin. Malloy said he had gone into rehabilitation programs but they did not work. In fact, he said, last Friday he was stopped by police and said he was under the influence of controlled substances, particularly heroin.He told Serfass, "I really need help."Serfass refused to give Malloy any credit for time spent in the rehab programs. He said, "I'm not giving you credit because apparently it didn't work."Serfass imposed 72-hour to six-month jail terms on each count, running consecutively. He ordered Malloy to pay a fine of $1,000 on each count, total license suspensions of two years, and render a total of 50 hours of community service after he is released on parole.The jail term begins at 9 a.m. on May 15.Other casesOther defendants sentenced included:Thomas D. Nodzo, 48, of Ephrata, Lancaster County, and formerly of Albrightsville, was sentenced to serve five days to six months on a DUI charge followed by 24 months of probation on a charge of resisting arrest.Nodzo was arrested on May 4, 2014, along Wintergreen Trail in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance. At the stop he resisted arrest.On the DUI charge, Serfass ordered Nodzo to pay a fine of $500, have his license suspended for a year, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, and he must render a total of 125 hours of community service.He was given credit for 10 days spent in jail on the charge and was paroled.Kelly Allesch, 44, of Allentown, was sentenced to serve 30 days in the county prison followed by 59 months in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program with the first 60 days spent on electronic monitoring.She must also pay a fine of $1,500, have her license suspended for 18 months, and render a total of 100 hours of community service.She will serve the 30 days on consecutive weekends beginning at 10 a.m. May 22.Jay Miller, 23, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in prison.He was arrested on March 11, 2014, along Forest Inn Road in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. A test showed the presence of a controlled substance.He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, have his license suspended for a year, and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on June 3.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
