Three defendants in pending drug cases entered a plea before Carbon County Judge Steven R. Serfass this week.

Barbara J. Hiler, 39, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.She was arrested by agents of the state Attorney General's office and the county drug task force after she sold 10 tablets of hydrocodone to a confidential informant. The sale occurred on Sept. 12, 2013, in the area of 509 South St., Jim Thorpe.Serfass deferred sentencing to a later date.Kayla Marie Smith, 25, of Nesquehoning, pleaded to one count of possession of a controlled substance.She was arrested following a vehicle stop on Oct. 5 by state police at Lehighton along Route 209 near Carbon Street in Lehighton. Smith was a passenger in the vehicle. Troopers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle and conducted a search. Found in Smith's purse was 46 pills of alprazolam, for which she did not have a prescription.Serfass sentenced her to time served (nine days) to 12 months in prison and ordered her to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use, and render 50 hours of community service.Jailil Derrick Veney, 19, of Albrightsville, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. A charge of possession of a controlled substance was dropped in a plea bargain.He was arrested on Aug. 15 following a vehicle stop along Route 903 at Smith Road, in Penn Forest Township, by state police at Fern Ridge.Veney was a passenger in the vehicle and was found to have marijuana in this possession.Serfass placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.Smith and Veney were also ordered to pay court costs of about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
