Jean and J. Carl Hafer Sr. of Tamaqua have a lot of celebrating to do in September.

Mrs. Hafer turned 90 years old on Sept. 13, while Carl will celebrate his 92nd birthday on Sept. 21.Jean is the daughter of the late Oswald and Nellie (Gallagher) Fisher and has a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Gallagher. She attended St. Jerome's School and was active with the former Catholic Women's Education Association and the SS. Peter and Paul Ladies Auxiliary. She also served as a Cub Scout den mother for 18 years.Carl is a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and retired from AT&T's Allentown facility in 1985. He has two sisters, Doris Ney of Schuylkill Haven and Betty Hafer of Tamaqua; and two brothers, Ralph of Auburn and Paul of Tamaqua.A Boy Scout leader for 25 years, he was presented the Silver Beaver and St. George Catholic Scouting Awards. He was also active with the Knights of Columbus and was a life member of the South Ward Fire Company in Tamaqua, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of American Legion Post 173, the Tamaqua Senior Citizens, the Navy Club U.S. Ship #257 of Minersville, a plank member of the U.S. Navy Memorial and a plank and life member of the Sampson World War II Navy Veterans.The Hafers are both graduates of Tamaqua High School and are members of St. John XXXIII (St. Jerome's) Catholic Church in Tamaqua, where they both served as eucharistic ministers.They are the parents of four children: Ester Jean, wife of Stanley Borascius of Schnecksville; J. "Ted" Hafer of Hometown; Gregory Hafer of Pottsville; and the late J. Carl Hafer Jr. The Hafers have 10 grandchildren: Robert Borascius of Schnecksville; Joseph Hafer, Dean Hafer and Alex Hafer, all in Colorado; Lance Hafer in Delaware; Bernadette Trostle of Auburn; Brandon Hafer in Virginia; the late Scot and Stanley Borascius and the late John C. Hafer III. They also have 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.The couple also celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on Aug. 15.
