The Schuylkill Township supervisors fielded questions about various zoning issues this week.

Zoning officer Paul Benulis said if people have a permit that is expiring or expired, they don't need to pay to renew it. They just need to let him know that they need more time.Charles Fayash choked up when he spoke about forgetting to thank his dad, Andrew J. Fayash, who died April 4 in the past few meetings for painting a sign outside of the municipal building. He thanked the township for approving a motion to making a plaque to honor his father's service to the town as a former supervisor.Landlord Joe Chamoun from Tuscarora said he his neighbor is blocking air vents and windows from his property and blocking common areas with plywood in the basement.Solicitor Christopher Slusser said that unless the neighbor is in violation of any township ordinances, they can't do anything.Zoning officer Paul Benulis said that the person is describing it as "replacing siding," and that some parts of the two houses are connected in areas and others are not. He said if it's just replacing siding, she doesn't need a permit for that.PoliceThe board made a motion to appoint police Chief Frank DiMarco as code enforcement officer, for this case only, in lieu of the vacant code enforcement officer position.Another resident from Tuscarora requested that the police patrol his neighborhood a little more at night after neighbors had signs of burglary in their house, a shotgun was stolen from someone's car, and they hear noises coming from a house that has been vacant for two months.Patricia Stefanek from Brockton pleaded to have DiMarco patrol and look into the walking trail between Brockton and Tuscarora because she noticed that there are people riding four-wheelers up there, and throwing empty water bottles and ice tea containers around, even after it was all cleaned out last Saturday.TruckThe board went into an executive session to discuss the amount for a bid to purchase a 2002 Ford 550 dump truck from Foster Township.The meeting reconvened after the limit was set at $25,000, and was adjourned after they passed a motion to bid on the truck for the agreed amount.Stefanek asked the board why a different dump truck is being purchased than the one bidded last month.Slusser said that he counseled the board to take no further action because the advertisement of the emergency meeting to purchase the truck was not timely, according to the Sunshine Law. To avoid further legal troubles, they missed out on the bid for the truck.Stefanek was booed by those present in the back when she brought up the issue she's been having with newly appointed zoning officer Paul Benulis regarding theaddition to his house and his appointment as zoning officer.She was finally put to rest by Slusser, who said, "I understand your position, however, once the board issues a permit, whether you agree with it or not, at this point is water under the bridge. However, there is an administrative appeal process, and if you or any taxpayer had any reason to appeal that administrative decision, you had some time to do that, but that time has now passed, so this issue is closed."Covering the old business, the request to change all the street lights to LED got tabled again from April's meeting for more clarification as to the cost involved with PPL, and the type of lights they will put in to match the lumens of the existing lights.The board approved a $100 donation to the Schuylkill County Veteran's Trip Organization to sponsor two veterans to go to Washington, D.C.The township is accepting applications for the maintenance department, and approved a motion to advertise.
