County returns $94K in tipping fees

Twenty Carbon County municipalities will soon be getting a check from the county.

On Thursday, the county commissioners approved the repayment of 100 percent of the 2014 tipping fees to area municipalities, totaling $94,914.32. The reimbursements, which range from $520 to $9,737, are based on the tonnage collected by trash haulers in the municipality over the 2014 year.Earlier this year, the county voted to eliminate the $4 per-ton tipping fee because it had discontinued the recycling program in April 2013. The tipping fee was used to help with the operation of the recycling program. In March, the commissioners voted to give back 75 percent of the 2013 tipping fees. The participating municipalities only received 75 percent of the tipping fees collected for 2013 because of the recycling program still being in operation for the first three months of the year.At the time, the commissioners urged municipalities to open up a dialogue with their contracted trash haulers to see if they could get a reduction in their contract since the haulers no longer are charged the tipping fees at the landfills. In other matters, the commissioners voted to approve the appointments of five residents to the Pocono Counties Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Development Board, formerly the Workforce Investment Board. Those appointed include: Craig Zurn, president and CEO of Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank; Terrance Purcell, vice president of Ambulatory Support Services at Blue Mountain Health System; and Susan Storm, assistant district administrator in the Office of Vocation Rehabilitation, who will serve four-year terms from July 1 to June 30, 2019.Barbara Green, president of Blue Mountain Ski Area/Tuthill Inc., and Elaine Stalfa, assistant regional director, Eastern Region, for the Bureau of Workforce Partnership and Operations, will serve two-year terms from July 1 to June 30, 2017.Breakdown of refunds:Carbon County Commissioners voted to repay 100 percent of the 2014 tipping fees to municipalities. Here's how much the 20 participating municipalities will receive:Banks Township: $1,788.32Beaver Meadows: $1,808.52East Side Borough: $582.40Franklin Township: $6,835.24Jim Thorpe: $8,553.96Kidder Township: $6,966.16Lansford: $7,662.64Lausanne Township: $520Lehigh Township: $756.24Lehighton: $9,737.12Lower Towamensing: $5,405Nesquehoning: $6,442.32Packer Township: $1,664Palmerton: $9,368.76Parryville: $576.84Penn Forest Township (transfer station only): $6,786.92Summit Hill: $6,403.20Towamensing Township: $7,092.48Weatherly: $4,516.60Weissport: $1,437.60Total distributed: $94,914.32NOTE: Municipalities that did not contract for solid waste services (recycling program) or provide the service to the residents are excluded from receiving payment.
