Restored memorial

Dennis Scholtis and Chad Christman stand at the World War I Memorial in Washington Township. The memorial was at the Methodist Church in Emerald but was moved in the early 1980s to the Star Hose Fire Company in Emerald. Scholtis, fire marshal with Star Hose Company, served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Christman, a Marine serving in Iraqi Freedom, also with Star Hose Co., cleaned the memorial. Scholtis scraped it with acid and washed it with bleach. Christman painted the lettering. The memorial reads “Erected in honor of the soldiers and sailors who served God and their country in the war for democracy, 1917-1919.” ELSA KERSCHNER/TIMES NEWS
