Lansford Borough Council received a letter from the local fire department seeking an appeal from construction regulations.
The fire department has nearly completed construction of a new garage. The letter to council asks that the borough exonerate the fire company from requiring a sprinkler system, which will make the construction project more expensive. But the appeal is moot, council members said. The borough doesn't have a Unified Construction Code Board of Appeals.Council member Tommy Vadyak said he doesn't feel the fire company should have such an exemption, anyway. He said the fire company garage was constructed with grant funds. He said he feels the sprinkler system is needed because "fire companies do catch fire."Five members are needed for a UCC Board of Appeals.Anyone interested in serving on such a board should have construction background. People can submit an application to borough secretary Mary T. Fittos. There are other vacancies on boards and commissions that the council would like volunteers to fill. For any such vacancy, apply with Fittos.Vacancies are:• Planning commission: One vacant seat for a four-year term.• Police pension board: One vacant seat.• Vacancy board: One vacant seat.
