Cleaning and repair work began Wednesday at daybreak in Tamaqua after storms dumped 4.1 inches of rain in a matter of hours on Tuesday, according to AccuWeather.
Weather reports indicated storms stalled over eastern Schuylkill County.Borough crews, lifeguards and others converged on the Tamaqua Bungalow Park to begin cleanup at the main pool and children's pool. The community park grounds were turned into a large, muddy lake after mountain streams and runoff filled the park with an estimated 400,000 gallons of mud."It began to subside by the time we got here," said one worker.Crews installed five portable pumps to rid the pool of muddy water. Others used fire hoses to wash down sidewalks, grassy areas, and, eventually, the pools. The pool might still be closed for the July 4th weekend but workers said Wednesday they're hoping to beat the clock."We're hoping the pool can reopen Saturday," said a helper. However, others felt the soonest the pool would reopen is Sunday. In the meantime, Tamaqua pool passes will be honored at the Lansford community pool.In the downtown area, residents and business owners opened cellar windows to bring in fresh air in order to dry out basements. Some began gathering waterlogged possessions that had been stored in cellars in the hope of salvaging what they could. Many damaged items, however, will need to be discarded after being exposed to contaminated waters of the Wabash Creek.
