A windswept fire ravaged a vacant double-block home early this morning in Lansford.

The fire broke out around 4:15 a.m. at 522 E. Front St., according to Lansford Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hood.Upon arrival, Hood said there was "heavy fire" at the 522 side, which quickly spread to the 524 side.Hood said one veteran firefighter of 30 years "said he never saw anything like it. He said it's like a tornado blowing up the street."It took various fire departments about two hours to quell the fire, said Hood, who added that icy conditions compounded the situation."Everybody worked hard together," Hood said.He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, as the fire marshal was on his way to the scene.Also assisting at the scene were Summit Hill Fire Department, Coaldale Fire Department, Nesquehoning Fire Department, Tamaqua Rapid Intervention Team, Mahoning Valley EMS Rehab Unit and Lehighton ALS.
