A once-in-a-lifetime event.

Not only that, but right in our very own backyard.Rarely does such an opportunity present itself, let alone in the town in which we live.Yet, that's exactly what Lehighton afforded its residents when it held its 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration.Conducted over the course of eight days, the celebration proved to have something for everyone.Though I wasn't there to cover the event for the paper, I did manage to take off my reporter's hat and attend several functions.I must say seeing the events unfold from a spectator's point-of-view represented a nice change of pace.It enabled me to see things from a different perspective, rather than focus on the who, what, where, when, why and how.Though my wife and I did not attend each day of the celebration, there were several events in particular that really stood out.While I didn't see it for myself, I was told the parade, with its various cars, trucks, floats and marching units, was something to see.I'm sure the spectators who are lifelong residents of the borough were flattered to see their hometown revered in such a positive light.For those who were around to celebrate the borough's centennial 50 years ago, the 150th was likely a trip down memory lane.Hopefully for the younger generation, the parade symbolized what commitment and dedication to one's hometown is all about.As we visited some of the food vendors, we ran into many familiar faces, all of whom agreed the celebration was nicely done.A captivating fireworks show capped off the celebration.So good were the fireworks that many clamored for an encore display next year.Kudos to the committee for doing such a masterful job, as well as the participants.All of you deserve a big pat on the back because without you, the event could not have been possible.On our walk back home, I began to look to the future.God willing, I should be able to celebrate the borough's quartoseptennial (175-year anniversary) in 2041.With any luck, I could be around to witness its bicentennial (200-year anniversary) in 2066.As for its semiquicentennial (250-year celebration), no chance whatsoever.Congratulations, Lehighton, on what indeed proved to be a celebration for the ages.Here's wishing the town and its constituents many more years of bliss.
