Academy hosts career day for students

They displayed a cool, confident demeanor well beyond that of their years as they "interviewed" for jobs.

High school students also learned how to create résumés, business cards and thank-you notes as part of the Commonwealth Connections Academy Career Day.Business leaders from several companies throughout the region conducted mock interviews with high school students Tuesday at the public cyber charter school in Andreas.Also as part of the event, students heard from business leaders about the qualities they seek in an employee.The students then had the opportunity to interview with the business leaders, who offered them guidance on how to improve their interview skills.During the interviews, the students had three minutes to interview with each company.As part of the interviews, the companies evaluated the students based on several criteria.Kurt Amen, STEM conservatory manager, Commonwealth Connections Academy, said the activity provided an excellent opportunity to teach job seeking skills to the students.Amen said the students who participated in the activity did "an amazing job."Among the businesses on hand were the Rodale Institute; Quandel; Jessi Lee Ross, a self-employed artist and musician; Silberline; Lehigh Carbon Community College; Particle Sciences; Love Paws Pet Sitting Service; Da Vinci Science Center; Kelly Services; Guitar Center; and Sgt. Jason Lorah, from the West Penn Police Department.Career Day is part of the school's Conservatory Program effort to promote internships and post-secondary options.
