Charges bound over in daytime purse snatching

tahner@tnonline.comCharges against a Palmerton man accused of purse snatching have been bound over to Carbon County Court.Anthony Borrelli, 29, of 304 Delaware Ave. was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.Instead, Borrelli waived his right to the hearing, and is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. May 5 for a pretrial status conference in the district attorney's office at the courthouse in Jim Thorpe.Borrelli faces charges on two counts each of theft, criminal trespass, and receiving stolen property, as well as one count each of robbery, burglary and criminal mischief.He has been returned to Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 straight bail.According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Detective Kevin Buck of the borough police department:At 12:30 p.m. March 27, Buck was dispatched to the area of Fourth Street and Avenue A for a report of a purse snatching.Buck said he was directed to Canal Street, where he was met by two men who said that they had witnessed a men wearing a black and white jacket with a red shirt underneath take a woman's purse and run.As the two men chased him he took off the jacket, and a red shirt underneath. Both were later recovered.Several other witnesses also chased and watched the men enter the residence of 346 Lehigh Ave. through an unlocked front door.Buck attempted to make contact with Borrelli, and found he had locked both the front and back door.Buck returned to the rear of the home and heard numerous loud bangs coming from the upstairs.Buck contacted the home's resident, who was at work, by telephone, and she said she would return home immediately and provide access to the home.While waiting for the resident, officer Daniel Magarelli, who was observing the rear of the home, spoke with a man identified as Borrelli, who had come out of the rear sliding door of 348 Lehigh Ave.When the resident arrived, Buck searched inside the home along with three troopers from Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton and Chief Scott Fogal of the Lehigh Township Police Department.While searching the home, a fresh cigarette was found floating in the toilet, and in the third floor attic area, the partition separating the residences between 346 and 348 Lehigh Ave. was found to have been kicked in and entry made into the residence of 348 Lehigh Ave.Borrelli had ransacked several drawers and the closet in the master bedroom and changed clothing.Magarelli spotted Borrelli leaving the home through the rear door and proceeding south toward Alley A.Witnesses identified Borrelli from a picture.Magarelli went to the Delaware Apartments No. 108, and Borrelli was brought back to Palmerton Police Department. Borrelli said he was not going to speak to anyone without speaking to his attorney first.Officer John Rupell still gave Borrelli his Miranda warnings and he invoked his right to counsel.As Buck was preparing paperwork, Borrelli said, "You have all the evidence you need; this is the worst thing I have ever done, and is there any way we can speed this up so I can go to jail."The victim said she was on Delaware Avenue in the area of the produce store and was approached by a man wearing the same type of clothing as Borrelli, and the man approached her on the left side, pulling her purse off her shoulder and running with it.The purse was later recovered in the area of the railroad tracks and was identified as the victim's purse.
