A Carbon County judge rejected a plea for a county prison term and sentenced a Slatedale man to a state prison term on Monday afternoon.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Anthony Borrelli, 30, to serve a total of 14 to 48 months in a state correctional institution on one count of robbery and two counts each of criminal trespass and theft.Borrelli was charged by grabbing a woman's purse and then burglarized a home for a change of clothes.According to Palmerton police, Borrelli snatched an elderly woman's purse as she walked along the street around 12:30 p.m. March 27, 2015. Two men gave chase and saw Borrelli enter a home in the 300 block of Lehigh Avenue through an unlocked front door.Borough detective Kevin Buck tried to go after Borrelli, but he had locked both the front and back doors. Buck contacted the woman who lived there, who said she would immediately come home from work and open a door.Patrolman Daniel Magarelli then saw Borrelli exit from the back door of the attached home. Borrelli had kicked through an attic partition separating the homes.Borrelli had ransacked several drawers and changed into clothing from a closet in the first home.Borrelli was caught at the Delaware Apartments and arrested.Defense attorney Paul Levy, of the public defender's office, asked Serfass to sentence his client in the mitigated range of the sentencing guidelines or a time-served term with credit he spent in an inpatient rehabilitation program and the county prison. Levy noted the time he spent in the rehab facility in an effort to term his life around. He said he was still a young man with a chance to change his life.Borrelli also asked Serfass for a county term or a long probation period. He told the court, "I know what I did was terrible. I just want a chance to right things."Serfass, noting from a presentence investigation report prepared by the adult probation office, said that Borrelli "is a young man with a long criminal record."Serfass said he had to weigh the time Borrelli spent in rehab and his long criminal record which includes two probation/parole revocations. He said that goes against a mitigated range sentence.Serfass said he would give Borrelli credit for the time spent in the inpatient rehab and time spent in prison on the charges.In addition to the prison term Borrelli was ordered to make restitution of $225, get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use and pay court costs of about $1,000.He was given credit for a total of 381 days. He began the jail term immediately.
