Woman charged with firing gun
A Carbon County woman who fired a shot in her home is scheduled to appear in district court.
Sue Diehl, 49, of Palmerton, faces charges of recklessly endangering another person, terroristic threats, and discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.According to the affidavit filed by Detective Kevin Buck of the Palmerton Police Department:At 10:55 p.m. Sept. 10, police were dispatched for a report of a domestic with the report of a single shot fired.Upon arrival, police were met outside the home by a man and a woman. They said the woman who fired the shot was inside. They went inside and met Diehl, who was walking toward them from the kitchen area with her hands in the air, and was placed in handcuffs.Buck and officer Timothy Kromer entered the bedroom and located the gun behind the bedroom door behind a picture frame, and underneath a bookshelf.Police took two handguns and had the fired weapon identified.Diehl said that she and the man had been invited to a 21st birthday party of their friend's child, and since she knew it would bring back some memories, she made sure they both took their medications to try to keep their emotions under control. She said they attended the party and were both drinking alcohol and were intoxicated.Diehl said when they returned home, she attempted to speak about their relationship, but that it was not going well. While they were speaking at some point, she had gone to the bedroom and retrieved her gun, loaded it, closed the barrel, and sat on it as she continued speaking. At one point, Diehl asked, "Who is going to die tonight, are you going to die, or am I going to die because I won't shoot you and not shoot myself."Diehl said the man said she was insane. She said she was done and walked into the living room and he followed.According to the affidavit, she turned around and said, "You don't hear me, maybe this will get your attention." She fired a shot. When asked where she fired it from, Diehl said she was standing in the living room and fired it in the direction of the television, but that the man wasn't in the line of fire and that she had no intention to harm him, but wanted to get his attention.Buck asked her what took place next and she said that the man had taken the weapon from her and struck her in the head, knocking her to the floor, telling her he was calling the police and then began to duct tape her hands and arms together.Diehl said that she had managed to get to a knife and cut herself loose as the police department arrived. She is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 10 a.m. Dec. 7 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton. She remains free on $10,000 unsecured bail.
