A look back: March 20, 1990

Fifteen classic photographs by George Harvan of Lansford, recognized as one of America’s finest photographers, will be shown in an exhibition at the Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg, it was announced today.

Harvan, his wife, Jean, and their family, will be the guests of Gov. Robert P. Casey and his wife, Ellen, at the Palm Sunday opening.

The series of photographs Harvan has selected for the exhibition document the toil and the pioneer spirit of anthracite miners in the heart of the Eastern Pennsylvania hard coal region, especially in the Panther Valley miners of bygone days. Curating the exhibition will be Ricardo Viera, director of the Lehigh University Art Galleries, Bethlehem.
