Tamaqua art center events planned

Several special events have been added to the regular weekly classes at the Tamaqua Community Art.

A Kids Art Camp will be held daily from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. the week of July 11. Summer Shanty artists Cindy Miller and Amy Sweeney will take participant to the "great outdoors" without leaving the art-conditioned coolness of the center. Projects will include painting on wood, creating papier-m'ché bowls, working with modeling clay and creating melted crayon art. All supplies and snacks are included in the cost.Camp is open to those between the ages of 8 and 14.A Pysanky Ukranian Egg workshop is schedule for 9:30 a.m. July 23.For the budding or serious artist, Chalk and Chew sessions are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 12 and 26; a Paint and Sip class will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 20; oil painting with Maritza is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 21; color pencil class with Amy Mogish will be at 6 p.m. July 22; and an adult coloring session "Color between the Wines" is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 28.The Clay Works Studio fires up on Mondays and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and 11 a.m. on Saturdays. A clay trivets class will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday.Weekly and monthly events include: Mosaic artist Kim East offers classes at 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday; the Bucket List Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month;

L.O.L writers' group meets at 6 p.m. every Thursday; yarn classes are held at 9 a.m. Saturdays; yoga classes are held at 6 p.m. Mondays.For the musically inclined: the Coal Cracker Chorus rehearses at 7:30 p.m. Mondays; harmonica lessons are held Wednesdays at noon; and guitar lessons are held at 9 a.m. Saturdays.Two entertainment events are scheduled during July and the Tamaqua Area Community Theatre is rehearsing for its August production of "Gypsy."Comedian Liz Pusso will be the featured performer at Tamaqua's first "Step Up" event on July 15. Step Up is a cooperative venture designed to help fight the growing drug abuse problem through support, treatment, education and prevention. Sponsors include the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership, the Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network, Safer Streets for Tamaqua' Little Feets, the Tamaqua Safety Initiative, Tamaqua's National Night Out committee and Skook Recovers. Jason Brown will serve as host for the event, which also features Glen Tickle.The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. and all proceeds will benefit the Skook Recovers group.Two bands will take the stage on July 16 for tribute night."After Image" will present a tribute to the band "Rush," while "Outside the Wall" pays tribute to Pink Floyd. The music will begin at 7 p.m.Organizers are hoping the audience will support the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program by donating a new toy as part of their admission. Toys are not required.The Tamaqua Area Community Theatre will present its production of "Gypsy" at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 and at 2 and 7 p.m. Aug. 6. The show is not recommended for anyone under the age of 13 due to its content and language, and the audience is welcome to BYOB.The show is being presented through an arrangement with the TAMS-Whitmark Music Library Inc. of New York and is based on a book by Arthur Laurents, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a burlesque dancer and actress.For more information on any of the listed events, call 570-668-1192.The art center is located at 125 Pine St. in Tamaqua.
