Memorial run honors 'super' teacher
There have been many complimentary words used to describe Tamaqua teacher Thelma Urban since her sudden death this past June, but one word in particular seems to fit everything about Mrs. Urban. Super is the word her students, family, friends and even acquaintances find themselves using when they describe her - super wife, super teacher, super mom, super friend.
So, it's only fitting that a memorial in her honor also be super, according to former students such as Kyle Weaver, Kayla Hope and Emily Zancofsky. Many of Urban's former students and Tamaqua High School biology teacher Roseann Weinrich have teamed together to create a memorial run in the late teacher's honor. The Supurban 5K Memorial Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk/Run is being planned for Oct. 17, the day after Tamaqua High School's Homecoming football game. Registration and sign in will begin at 8 a.m. with the race scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Tamaqua High School Sports Complex.Organizers are encouraging participants to come as superheroes, fitting with the theme of the race. The 5K will leave the stadium and go down Stadium Hill to Broad Street, where runners will turn right and proceed to the east end of town before returning to the field. The Fun Run/Walk participants will use the stadium track.During a memorial service for Urban, organized by her students and Tamaqua School District staff, the language arts teacher was remembered for her passion for life and steadfast support of her students, especially those considered by others to be "underdogs." Every speaker made it clear she did more than just teach language arts. She also found ways to show her students the real meaning of community service, including the creation of an anti-bullying video, Community Fit Day, a Hero Project, Family Day, a book fair, teen read challenge and community clean up days. It's said we "should learn something new every day." Mrs. Urban made sure her students did just that.Registration forms are available at
