New archives building nears completion

Carbon County officials expect to move records and equipment into a renovated archives building by year's end.

Commissioners on Thursday extended the contracts of two companies and approved a change order for a third. The change orders extended the end dates of contracts with Leibold Inc. of Pottsville, and with Larry McCullion and Son of Summit Hill, from Sept. 6 to Oct. 21.The contract with Leibold is for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The one with McCullion is for electrical work. The third change, to a contract with Spotts Brothers Inc., Schuylkill Haven, saves $3,000 by replacing a 100-gallon water heater with a 75-gallon one.Commissioners in March awarded Leibold a $112,400 contract; McCullion a $33,500 contract, and Spotts a $31,460 contract. The work is expected to wrap up by the end of October, said Commissioners' Chairman Wayne E. Nothstein. The county bought the building, the former Dollar & More store on Fourth Street on the east side of Jim Thorpe, in September 2015 for $95,000.The archives are now stored in a building on Susquehanna Street. But that building will be razed to make way for a three-story office building for other county departments.
