L. Towamensing budget to keep tax rate in check

Lower Towamensing Township residents shouldn’t have to set aside extra funds toward their municipal tax rates next year.

At least not after supervisors on Wednesday unanimously agreed to tentatively adopt the 2027 budget and advertise it for next month’s meeting with no tax increase.

That would leave the millage rate at 2.5 mills.

In December, supervisors adopted this year’s budget with no tax increase.

This year’s general fund budget came in at $934,192.

However, as part of this year’s budget, supervisors agreed to raise the garbage rate by $100 across the board.

That meant residents who paid $230 had to spend $330, while senior citizens who paid $200 now owed $300.

The new garbage rates went into effect Jan. 1.

Casella is the township’s current waste hauler. When the township sought bids five years ago, County Waste was awarded the contract. County Waste was bought out by GFL, which was subsequently bought out by Casella.
