Marian seeks another victory over Tri-Valley

When he steps onto the field Friday night, Marian’s Tyler Price will already consider it a plus for both he and his team.

“I see this season as a success,” Price said. “We are in the postseason, and that’s all that matters to me.”

The third-seeded Colts (4-6) will travel to second-seeded Tri-Valley (6-4) for a District 11 Class 1A semifinal Friday at 7 p.m.

Both teams enter the postseason looking to reverse recent trends.

Marian has dropped three straight, including a 24-7 loss to Schuylkill Haven in its regular-season finale. Tri-Valley has lost two of its last three, most recently falling 28-21 to Williams Valley.

Price has been one of the area’s most productive players, leading the Times News area with 1,476 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns. He also has 34 receptions for 564 yards and seven scores.

Quarterback Greg Tirpak leads the area with 1,568 passing yards, along with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. Rocco Griguoli has an area-best 41 receptions for 697 yards and seven scores.

Price credits his teammates for helping him put together an impressive season.

“I feel I’m running the ball well and finishing my runs,” Price said. “Most importantly, though, I’ve helped my team win games. If it wasn’t for my offensive line and fullback, none of this would be possible. They’re a huge part of the team’s success, and my success.

“I expected to be a big part of this offense, but not this big.”

Tri-Valley’s offense features running back Patrick Hatter, who has rushed for 857 yards and 12 touchdowns. Quarterback Trey Porter has thrown for 971 yards and nine scores, while Doyle Flory has 23 catches for 318 yards and five touchdowns.

The teams met Oct. 2, with Marian pulling out a 24-21 victory. Price rushed for 162 yards and scored both a rushing and receiving touchdown, while Hatter missed the game due to injury.

The teams have split their last four meetings, with Tri-Valley holding an 8-6 advantage in the all-time series.

Marian coach Billy O’Gurek was disappointed with how the regular season ended against Schuylkill Haven, believing the Colts missed opportunities to make the game more competitive.

He expects another physical battle against a familiar opponent Friday.

“Our first matchup was a great game between two physical football teams that know each other well,” O’Gurek said. “We’re expecting the same, and look forward to another opportunity to compete in the district playoffs.”

Despite the Colts’ record, Price believes they are capable of more.

“We should be a 7-3 football team right now, but we’ve had a couple of close losses that held us back,” he said. “But we know what we’re capable of, and we hope to show everyone this Friday.”
