Tamaqua soup pickup Saturday, walk Sunday
Soup buyers can pick up their orders during the Great Tamaqua Community Soup Sale from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church Social Hall in Tamaqua.
A total of 245 quarts of homemade soup were sold this year, supporting the 15th annual Tamaqua Area Community Hunger Campaign.
A limited number of extra quarts may be available for purchase while supplies last.
Soup buyers also can enter a free raffle for gift certificates to six area restaurants that participated in the campaign’s Dine Out Against Hunger Days. The restaurant fundraiser encouraged residents to patronize participating eateries while helping raise money for local hunger-relief programs.
Those picking up multiple quarts are encouraged to bring a reusable bag or box to make carrying their orders easier.
The Great Tamaqua Community Soup Sale is one of several activities held during the October hunger campaign, a cooperative effort of the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership. The campaign brings together churches, businesses, community organizations and individuals to collect food and financial donations for neighbors experiencing food insecurity.
This year’s campaign seeks to raise $25,000 and collect 175 boxes of nonperishable food. Donations support four local food pantries — American Primitive Methodist Church, G-Lady Community Food Pantry, Trinity United Church of Christ and People’s Pantry at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church — as well as the baby food ministry at St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church. Together, these programs help provide food for hundreds of area families each month.
Other campaign activities have included food donations through Boyer’s Market Feed a Family Days, Dine Out Against Hunger and community fundraising events. The campaign will culminate with the 15th annual Tamaqua Area Hunger Walk on Nov. 1.
