Crews battle traffic to rescue injured hiker

A woman who broke her ankle while hiking the Mount Pisgah Plane was carried out by firefighters and medics Saturday afternoon and taken to a waiting ambulance at Sam Miller Field.

The hiker was roughly 200 to 300 yards up the inclined plane that cuts behind the properties near the field when crews reached her, Jim Thorpe Municipal Fire Department Chief Vince Yaich Jr. said.

“We put her in a Stokes basket. The medics secured her injuries, and then we carried her down,” Yaich said.

About 10 personnel between Jim Thorpe Municipal Fire Department and Lehighton EMS worked the call. The ambulance crew transported the woman for treatment.

“Once we got her down, we were able to make room down in Sam Miller ballfield and had the ambulance down there waiting for us,” Yaich said.

The terrain worked in the rescuers’ favor. Yaich compared the call to harder extrications in the gorge, where crews face longer and more technical carries.

“This one was easier compared to that. It’s a lot more involved in the gorge,” Yaich said. “She was in a good location that we were able to access her.”

The bigger obstacle was the borough itself. October weekend crowds slowed the effort to move gear into position.

“The biggest downfall was trying to get the equipment in with the traffic, but we made it work,” Yaich said.
