2 facing charges after setting off fireworks
Two Massachusetts men are facing arson-related charges after authorities say fireworks set off during a weekend rental stay in Kidder Township damaged nearby homes in the Lake Harmony Estates development.
Township police were first called to Skye Drive on Aug. 21 after reports of fireworks being launched from a rental home at 103 Skye Drive. Officers spoke with renter Ragy Emile, 25, of Clinton, Massachusetts, who admitted setting off fireworks but said he believed they were legal.
Police warned him that fireworks were prohibited in the densely built, wooded development and told him to stop.
The next morning, officers responded to a neighboring rental property at 115 Skye Drive, where guests reported fireworks had been launched throughout the night. Residents found debris and damage to a covered deck and siding after hearing three explosions around 3:30 a.m. Witnesses told police the fireworks appeared to be coming from the direction of 103 Skye Drive.
During a follow-up interview, Emile acknowledged that others in his group had continued setting off fireworks after police left. He said the group included two employees who had traveled to the area for an event at Pocono Raceway.
Investigators later obtained surveillance video from the neighborhood showing a person lighting and aiming a firework horizontally down a driveway toward a home at 2:36 a.m. The projectile exploded in a large fireball. Three men then ran into 103 Skye Drive carrying what appeared to be fireworks tubes.
Police identified one of the men as Emile and another as Shawn Cisneros of Clinton, Massachusetts. The targeted home at 98 Skye Drive was occupied at the time by a woman who was asleep inside.
In a telephone interview with police on Aug. 27, Emile, Shawn Cisneros and Ely Grocki, 26, of Marlborough, Massachusetts, admitted they had spent the Aug. 21-23 weekend at 103 Skye Drive and had launched fireworks from the home’s rooftop deck.
As questioning continued, investigators said their accounts became vague and inconsistent. Emile later acknowledged that the group had been drinking, walking around and setting off fireworks during the early morning hours. He also offered to pay for any damage caused.
Additional surveillance footage obtained Aug. 30 showed four men leaving the rental property on checkout day, contradicting earlier statements about who had stayed there. Police said the footage indicated those interviewed had been deceptive about the number and identities of people at the home.
Emile and Grocki are each charged with four counts of arson; three counts of unlawful use of consumer fireworks; two counts of risking a catastrophe and reckless endangerment; and one count of disorderly conduct.
Both were released on $100,000 unsecured bail and are scheduled for preliminary hearings Oct. 21 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. in Weatherly.
