The Lehighton Police Department held two events this week to help keep youth in the community safe.

Tuesday morning, officers conducted a Car Seat Check near the entrance of the Lehighton Area School District Administration building.

The police department posted word of the event on its Facebook page.

“During this operation, officers were checking for persons transporting children, while using proper child restraint systems, depending on the age, height and weight of the children,” said police Chief Troy Abelovsky. “Officers were also looking to address proper car seat belt positioning.”

Abelovsky said there were 196 vehicles contacted, 19 violations addressed with 10 citations and nine warnings issued.

The police department also provided two new booster car seats to families in need, he said.

Abelovsky added that officers only detained vehicles where violations of child restraint systems were evident.

“We would like to thank the cooperation and assistance of the Lehighton Area School District/Police for assisting with this detail,” he said. “The school police department also put out a media release to inform the school district families on the importance of child restraint systems and upcoming police activities this week.”

On Monday, the police department hosted a Car Seat Check at the Walmart parking lot that was sponsored by Kid Zone, Abelovsky said.

He said that event was free to the public. People were able to stop to have their seat checked to ensure proper installation of any issues with the seat.
