A powerful nor’easter storm expected to pummel parts of the East Coast with high surf, gusty winds and significant rainfall will likely spare the Times News coverage area.

“Right now, it looks like the greatest impacts from the nor’easter will be well to the east of the Lehighton area,” said John Feerick, an AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

While mid-Atlantic coastal areas could see dangerous wind gusts and several inches of rain from the storm, it won’t happen here.

“It’ll definitely be a bit breezy at times through the weekend and there may even be a couple of showers or some rain Saturday into Sunday, but we’re not expecting flooding rain or damaging wind gusts in the Lehighton area,” Feerick said.

He predicted that the amount of rainfall over the weekend will be less than a half-inch.

“The most likely time frame for some rain or a few showers is Saturday afternoon and Saturday night, perhaps lasting into Sunday morning,” Feerick said.

Heavier rains will be “much farther” to the east of our area, he noted.

“The worst impacts from the nor’easter will be across New England; especially Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut,” Feerick said.

Some of those places, he said, could see 4 to 8 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

“These strong winds will also result in significant coastal impacts including coastal flooding, rough surf and beach erosion and these impacts will extend all the way southward along the coast through Long Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina,” Feerick said.

Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high around 70, but wind gusts could be as high as 30 mph.

There is a chance of showers Saturday afternoon, with a high of 69.

Showers are likely Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
