A man died in a hit-and-run crash on Thursday at 11:32 p.m. on Route 903 in Penn Forest Township, state police at the Fern Ridge barracks said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Carbon County Chief Deputy Coroner Jason T. Smith and next of kin were notified.
The coroner’s office on Friday identified the man as Kyle Elardo, 27, of Suffolk County, New York.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center.
Police said they were dispatched to the area of Route 903 and Church Road and upon arrival found the man in the northbound lane of travel.
Police said it was determined he was operating an all-terrain vehicle and at some point fell off the vehicle and remained in the northbound lane.
They said the ATV came to a controlled stop off the right side of the road and did not appear to be damaged.
Police said that he was then struck by a vehicle, whose driver failed to stop and fled the scene. The striking vehicle is believed to be a white Subaru sedan and should have front driver’s side fender damage.
Police said the ATV was taken and placed into evidence.
The death is being investigated by the coroner’s office in conjunction with state police at the Fern Ridge and Lehighton stations; state police Forensic Services Unit; and state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction units.
