It’s been more than 10 years since retired employees who worked for Schuylkill County have gotten a cost of living adjustment (COLA) to their pensions, said Retired Employee’s Association President Bonnie Seifert.
County Controller Sharyn M. Yackenchick, who is secretary of the Retirement Board, at a board meeting Wednesday read a letter from the association asking for a COLA increase. But the request will have to wait until the county’s retirement fund gets updated financial information, she said.
“Once the county’s retirement fund receives the cost of living adjustment from the calculations from the county’s actuarial company, we will present the cost factors associated with authorizing the county cost of living adjustment,” Yackenchick said.
However, she said, those figures won’t be available until November.
Seifert, reached later in the week, said the COLA “comes out of the pension fund, as far as I know. It’s what the people who work for the county paid into it.”
“Right now, the cost of living means a lot to a lot of people,” said Seifert, who worked at the former county nursing home, Rest Haven, for 22 years.
Yackenchick also reported that the county’s retirement fund market value is doing well. As of Aug. 31, it stood at $201,877,134, As of Wednesday morning, it had grown to $202,159,148.
