A Monroe County man has died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds during an officer-involved shooting Friday in Middle Smithfield Township.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office said that Sean Thornton, 37, of Middle Smithfield Township, was pronounced dead in the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono Emergency Department at 7:43 p.m. after an incident at 696 Marshalls Creek Road.

The cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds, while the manner of death is homicide, the coroner’s office said.

The Pennsylvania State Police, along with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, are conducting their investigation into the incident.

At 5:49 p.m. Friday, troopers from the state police Stroudsburg barracks were dispatched to a residence on Marshalls Creek Road for a report of a disturbance.

While on the scene, troopers discharged their weapons, striking Thornton.

They then immediately attempted lifesaving measures until Thorton was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono Emergency Department, where he was pronounced dead.

The troopers involved were placed on administrative leave, per Pennsylvania State Police Department regulations.
